Expect the Unexpected

Expect the unexpected. As I ponder this tag line from my favorite guilty-pleasure reality T.V. show, I can’t help but think of the springtime weather in Atlanta. After lying in wait through the frosty temps of winter, the delicate blooms of of the Bradford pear and the hydrangea make their long-awaited debut, only to suffer the betrayal of yet another late March cold snap. While Mother Nature may have trained us to anticipate her erratic behavior, many of our poor plants have yet to learn the same.

And I wonder as I observe this anomaly of nature, how can we “expect the unexpected” in the day-to-day? Within this trite mantra lies sound advice. It beckons us to lean in the direction of preparation and flexibility when our plans hit the inevitable snag.
Perhaps it’s the shower water that inexplicably turns cold just as we’ve soaped up our hair, the deer that nibbles our nascent tulip buds in the dark of night, or the driver who fails to yield at the three-way stop before we’ve even sampled our to-go cup of joe. It could even be the most dreaded of all: the school project, recently discovered and due the next day.

Whatever unplanned detour life implores us to take, “expecting the unexpected” gifts us the opportunity the handle these little sneak attacks with dignity and grace. So this spring, taking a cue from my confused green/brown Bermuda grass and my beloved reality show, I resolve to accept that my plans can and will go awry. Although people and things will throw the wild pitch often, I can change course to catch it, or at least dive gracefully while trying.

Go Breakers!

Aberdeen Resident asks
"How can I help hungry kids in Forsyth County?"
Becky Woomer would like you to join her at the clubhouse on May 12, from 4-6 for a family potluck meal and to gather packed food bags for Forsyth County kids. Her community action group, Connect the Dots, is partnering with Meals by Grace, who makes weekly food deliveries all summer to children of needy families. Did you know that there are 8,800 children in this county who are on government assisted meal plans and who may experience food insecurity? “For us, summer means relaxation, travel, and fun. For them, an end to the school year means an end to the two guaranteed meals they can eat at school every day,” notes Becky. Meals by Grace aims to bridge this need by delivering food to 183 children every week. Let's help out and share our good fortune, and socialize and have fun with our neighbors at the same time.

Please come and bring: a dish to share with others; and, a packed reusable grocery bag. Items to include are: a box of cereal, shelf-stable milk, peanut butter and jelly, fruit or applesauce cups, meals in a can (like ravioli, spaghettios), canned meat like tuna, ramen noodles, granola bars, pop tarts, trail mix, or PB crackers.

Becky hopes you can make it by to celebrate spring by getting together for fellowship and for giving. Please contact Becky Woomer at beckwoomer@gmail.com for more information.
