hygge
[hue-gah]
noun
A calm, comfortable time with people you love. A complete absense of frustrations, or anything emotionally overwhelming, often enjoyed with good food and drinks, warm blankets and candlelight.
Gettin' Hygge With It
The glowing lights of Christmas have dimmed, the festive decor stored in attics and basements until next December. It’s January, and the joy of the holiday season fades with each passing, dreary day, leaving many of us feeling the winter blues. We face the chore of putting our homes back in order, of getting things back to normal. But aer the celebrations of last month, “normal” feels more like a post-holiday void. How do we fill this space with something new? Some of us turn to resolutions, which oen entail setting unrealistic goals that we abandon within weeks or even days. Perhaps we simply aren’t ready to barrel head-first into the new year with fiery ambition.
Enter hygge, a Danish word pronounced “hoo-gah”, contrary to what my title would mislead you to believe. Hygge is more than a word, it’s a cultural concept the Danes have practiced and perfected, one which arguably makes them the happiest people on earth. The dictionary defines hygge as “a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being”. Think warm, fuzzy blankets, candlelight abounding, steaming cups of cocoa, coee, and tea, quality time with close family and friends, a little something sweet baking in the oven. And don we now the essential apparel for all things hygge: the fair isle sweater. It sounds a lot like Christmas but without the star-topped tree, the elf on your shelf, and the packed holiday schedule. It’s jumping into the new year but landing on a billowy pillow. It’s turning your home into a giant warm hug, perhaps just what you need to soen the journey from the holidays back to reality.
So get yourself a special set of hygge clothing and decor, and adopt a new season this month. Light those candles, string up some white bulb lights in the family room. Invite your bestie over for a Hallmark movie and a cup of tea. Cuddle up under a cozy blanket in your favorite fair isle sweater, stock up on that firewood, and hunker down with the ones you love for hygge season. Embrace the art of “cozy” as your January resolution.

An Ounce of Prevention...
If you are going on vacation or will be away for a few days you can have
the sheriff's department check on your home. This not only gives you a secure feeling, but also increases police presence in Aberdeen.
and click on the "Vacation Check" icon to submit a request.
It's a good thing to keep the Forsyth non emergency number handy, as well. This number goes to the same agents as calling 911, but if you are on vacation and want to get to our Forsyth 911 call center for some reason the non-emergency number is the best way.
Forsyth County Non-Emergency number: 770-781-3087

On December 2nd Aberdeen welcomed a special guest in red, Santa Claus! Attendees enjoyed crafts, cookies and cocoa along with a special visit with St. Nick. To everyone's surprise, The Grinch appeared and tried to steal everyone's cookies! Luckily Cindy Lou Hoo was there to remind him that "maybe Christmas was a little bit more." As always, these events can not take place without the help of our wonderful neighbors. Big thanks to Andrea Hyatt, Maddie Chapman, Madeline Sawyer, Billy and Kathy McGinty, Bob and Michelle Kehres, Anastasia Dees, Ella Panguito, Rania Abuaisheh, and Bob and Susan Sawyer.
