"What do you mean summer's over?"
- Barrett Walzer, 2 yrs

Summer's End

As the dog days of summer bleed into the dog days of fall...autumn is here in the south. College football and wreaths of yellow and orange are the only signs that is has truly arrived. That and Facebook photos of beautiful families selecting their Halloween pumpkins in shorts and sandals. The children have been in school for two months, and the days of jammies until noon and evening swims replacing bathtime are becoming a hazy memory. Admittedly, I was ready for the haphazardness of summer to end and the routine of school to begin. I was certainly over the eye-rolling, name-calling, tongue-sticking and feeling-hurting that our family togetherness seemed to be causing. Our morning sounds now consist of alarm clocks, coffee makers and the grumblings of a tired kindergartner and second grader.

I love the fall and most everything that comes along with it, but I now realize that each summer's end brings us closer to when our children will leave home. A co-worker lamented to me that when her daughter returns to college each fall, the pain is worse than when she first left her at the dorm her freshman year. Just as she's getting used to her being home, she's gone. We've all heard the saying, "The days are long but the years are short". I'm still new at this but it seems their first bus ride leads to a driver's license, which makes way for their first apartment, and then suddenly, you're a grandparent. Time, just as summer, is fleeting.

I vow to treat summer as a snapshot in time when my children don't grow. A moment where the only milestone they'll need to reach is swimming to the other side of the pool. Their assignments will be staying up late, eating ice cream and building impromptu blanket forts. The only testing that will be going on will be that of my patience, but only for a short while longer, so I'd better get to studying.

Ice Cream Floats

Aberdeen's annual Back-to-School Ice Cream Social was a great success! Thanks so much to Tara Garcia, Lisa Whitmire and Kristen Tokarz - this event went off without a hitch.  We even saw children step out of their ice cream comfort zone and try something new...ICE CREAM FLOATS!

Aberdeen Class of 2030
Thanks to Susan Cox and Elizabeth Strada, these rising Kindergarten Cuties
were able to connect before the big day and share a favorite summertime treat!
On October 6th, The Voice, Season Nine Contestant, Riley Biederer performed for Aberdeen residents and their guests at the Aberdeen pool. With her guitar and accompanying drummer she put a beautiful and soulful twist on songs from such artists as Fleetwood Mac, Neil Diamond, Kesha, Dolly Parton, Taylor Swift and more. Kudos to Aberdeen Social Committee (Jessica Mercon, Tara Garcia, Lynne Howard, Christine Pendleton, Colleen Hight and Megan Waite) for lining up such an amazing talent, transforming the pool area, and providing a plethora of delicious desserts. It was a magical evening and one we hope will be repeated, next year!

Spotlight: Aberdeen Junior Tennis Program
Thanks to Aberdeen's Tennis Committee the dream of a junior tennis program in the neighborhood is becoming a reality! During the month of September, free tennis clinics were provided by Coach Dennis Ball. Due to the overwhelming response, Coach Ball is now teaching group lessons for the newly formed  AJTP (Aberdeen Junior Tennis Program)! The AJTP's first official lessons began October 3rd with 30 children participating. There will be additional free clinics in the winter for those who missed the fall sessions. Already in the works is a kid's tournament to kick off the spring season- all proceeds are to benefit Children's Healthcare of Atlanta!

Design Standards
The ACC would like to remind neighbors that there are design standards for parking in Aberdeen. Please do not park perpendicular to the flow of traffic in a cul-de-sac. Vehicles should be parked parallel to the curb and with the flow of traffic. Also, commercial vehicles may only be parked in a garage when not in use. This includes traditionally non commercial vehicles that have advertising on the body of the vehicle and can be viewed from the street or an adjacent lot.
Section 2.06  GARAGE/PARKING

B. A vehicle is defined as: automobile, SUV, van, mini-van, school bus, truck, commercial vehicle, house trailer, mobile home, motor home, recreational vehicle, camper and habitable motor vehicle of any kind, boat or boat trailer, trailers of any kind, ATV of any kind, motorcycle, motor scooter, personal watercraft or like equipment.

1) No vehicle, as defined above, may be parked on any yard.

2) No vehicle as defined above may be parked in the street when it is possible to park in a driveway. Vehicles parked on the street must be parked in the direction of the flow of traffic.

D) Commercial vehicles regularly driven by a resident shall be parked in the garage when not in use. “Commercial vehicle” is defined as any vehicle with commercial lettering, signage, or logos painted or placed on a vehicle or deemed by the ACC to be utilized for commercial use.

Operation: TEAL Pumpkin Project
It is estimated that roughly 1 in every 13 children have a food allergy and nearly a third of those children are allergic to more than one type of food. For these children and their parents, Halloween can be a scary time. "The Teal Pumpkin Project is a worldwide movement to create a safer, happier Halloween for all." How do you do that, you ask? By simply providing non-food treats for those with allergies. Some ideas for this may be Stickers, Pencils, Rings, Vampire Teeth, Tattoos, etc. You can let parents and children know you are participating by purchasing a teal pumpkin or or by printing out a sign at https://www.foodallergy.org/education-awareness/teal-pumpkin-project/free-resources.
 Thanks for Participating!
