New Year, New You

Although I believe self improvement is always at the back of our minds ( a little voice that whispers ever so softly of our short comings), each start of the new year brings this voice to the forefront. Some of us vow to get in shape or eat better. For others it's their spending that they look to change... whether it be too much money or too little time. Getting organized is a big one, too.

Last year, my resolution was to not procrastinate. It was going to be an amazing year of deleting junk emails as soon as I received them, returning the permission slips to school the very next day, and not letting donations ride around in my car. Let's just say we've reached the end of 2017 and I can't say that I no longer procrastinate but I am writing this in a month with a D in the front of it, so it wasn't a total loss.

So why do so many of us fail? Why can we barely make it to February without breaking our resolutions? Don't eat that. Take the stairs. Get rid of the junk. Save the money. For many, these seemingly simple goals elude us- even the best of us. Some would say it's our limiting beliefs. Others call it weakness. Honestly, I think it's less complicated than that. We're just tired. And really busy. It takes a lot of work to change...heck, think of what an adjustment it is to have a kid or two. The world is demanding and it's a challenge to keep up with everything that is expected of us.

This year, I'm doing something different. I resolve to "keep doing" the things I've been doing right all along. I resolve to volunteer my time to this community, to sing to my son every night, to always grab the neighbors' kids from the bus when they can't make it,  to get secret hot chocolates with my daughter on the way to the library, and to tell my husband "yes" when he asks if he can play golf.

2018...I got this.

Design Standards

The ACC would like to remind neighbors that there are design standards for parking in Aberdeen. Please do not park perpendicular to the flow of traffic in a cul-de-sac. Vehicles should be parked parallel to the curb and with the flow of traffic. Also, commercial vehicles may only be parked in a garage when not in use. This includes traditionally non commercial vehicles that have advertising on the body of the vehicle and can be viewed from the street or an adjacent lot.
Section 2.06  GARAGE/PARKING

B. A vehicle is defined as: automobile, SUV, van, mini-van, school bus, truck, commercial vehicle, house trailer, mobile home, motor home, recreational vehicle, camper and habitable motor vehicle of any kind, boat or boat trailer, trailers of any kind, ATV of any kind, motorcycle, motor scooter, personal watercraft or like equipment.

1) No vehicle, as defined above, may be parked on any yard.

2) No vehicle as defined above may be parked in the street when it is possible to park in a driveway. Vehicles parked on the street must be parked in the direction of the flow of traffic.

D) Commercial vehicles regularly driven by a resident shall be parked in the garage when not in use. “Commercial vehicle” is defined as any vehicle with commercial lettering, signage, or logos painted or placed on a vehicle or deemed by the ACC to be utilized for commercial use.

Aberdeen Resident Organizes
Coat Drive for "The Place"- Forsyth
On November 11, many Aberdeen residents turned out to support a Chili Cook Off and Coat Drive to benefit The Place of Forsyth County, organized by Connect the Dots. Connect the Dots is a progressive community group dedicated to tolerance, fellowship, and social justice. Organizer and Aberdeen resident Becky Woomer said, "We saw a report that 600 children in the Forsyth County school district meet the definition of homelessness, and we thought at this time of year, a coat drive would be a great way to help needy families. We are lucky to live in one of the most comfortable and prosperous parts of the country, but people need help right here at home." The event collected 120 coats, thanks to the generosity of our friends and neighbors. Many people even donated brand-new coats and jackets.

The chili competition really heated things up, too. The would-be chili champions brought crock pots of their best chili, and everyone present got to sample the ten entries. Fixins and drinks were provided. When the votes were tallied, Aberdeen's Ryan Beverly took the $100 prize for Best Overall chili, with his cinnamon secret weapon. His victory was especially fitting given that it was Veteran's Day, and Ryan is a proud Marine veteran. Elizabeth Strada was runner up with her delicious traditional chili, and Matt Maguire took the prize for Most Creative for his sweet 'n spicy entry. It was a very tasty competition, and a real outpouring of generosity from our Aberdeen community. According to Becky, Connect the Dots hopes to make it an annual event.
