"The Star-Spangled Banner"
   -Francis Scott Key

O say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
O'er the ramparts we watch'd were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bomb bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there,
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

An Aberdeen 4th of July

This year marked my family's third July 4th in Aberdeen. It becomes a little sleepy around here with many of our neighbors vacating to a lake or beach. We generally enjoy having our choice of chairs at the pool and taking in the fireworks at First Redeemer Baptist Church (although rain disrupted our tradition, this year).  Burgers, hotdogs, and some type of "salad" (the kind without the lettuce) must be eaten at some point over the weekend. Cul de sac fireworks are a given (to the bane of moms with sleeping babes and dog owners, alike). This is our 4th of July in Aberdeen. It's not fancy but we are thankful for this weekend of leisure and we owe it all to so many that have fought to make and keep this great land of freedom and opportunity and possibilities.

Aberdeen Social
A big THANK YOU to our Aberdeen Social Committee Volunteers Lynne Howard, Jessica Mercon, Tara Garcia, Christine Pendleton and Susan Sawyer! They have coordinated two events so far this year- The Summer Kick-Off Party in May and Taco Thursday in June were a great success. Their next event is taking place on July 22nd and will connect rising Kindergartners with each other to make the Big Day a little less scary!
Neighborhood Watch
July 13th, Corporal Page Cash came to the Aberdeen Clubhouse to give a presentation about what a neighborhood watch is and what it isn't. She also gave tips on how to deter criminals and particularly how to minimize home burglary. The most important message that Cor. Cash wanted to convey was that if you as a homeowner feel a situation is suspicious- please call 911! It could be nothing but it could be everything.  Did you know that your neighbors are the most effective deterrent against burglaries? Get to know you neighbors and make sure they are aware of who should and should not be at your home- especially when you are out of town. Rest assured, we live in one of the safest counties in the country, but it is our relationship with each other and the police department that will ensure that Forsyth County stays that way. If you have concerns in the community that are not a present emergency, you may contact Forsyth County at 770-781-3087 or email aberdeennw@gmail.com and Gordon Amisano will forward your concern to Corporal Cash. Great job, Gordon, for arranging this important community meeting.

A Note from the ACC
The Architectural Control Committee is a small group of volunteers that are Aberdeen homeowners and neighbors. Their task is to ensure the Design Standards of the community are upheld in hopes of securing the integrity, consistency and value of our homes. Last month, their drive through focus was on standard lawn and exterior maintenance. Please note the Design Standards excerpts regarding lawn maintenance, below. Please keep in mind that having a lawn that is mowed and green but where the green is primarily weeds, is not in compliance.  The Design Standards may be found on the community website, aberdeencommunity.org .
Section 3.02 Lawns

All front lawns shall be Bermuda or Zoysia sod (or hybrid thereof)
to ensure consistency in the community unless a variance from this rule is approved in advance by the ACC. Side and rear yards may be either sod or seeded with one of four types: Bermuda, Fescue, Centipede or Zoysia. Lawns should be cut, edged, weeded and watered as often as needed to ensure a neat and healthy appearance.

Section 5.01 Yard Maintenance

A) Lawns, front, side and rear, should be regularly fertilized, edged and mowed.
B) Lawn clippings and edging debris should be removed from sidewalks, curbs and driveways. Do not blow or sweep into the street.
C) Weeds should be controlled. The multiple application of pre- emergent in the fall and early spring is an appropriate manner to prevent weeds, and the application of weed killer is an appropriate manner to kill weeds that have surfaced.
