Social Committee

The Aberdeen Social Committee has been busy keeping us connected.  The Varsity Food Truck stopped by on July 10, and the Pitch-in and Nacho Average Pool Party were both big hits the following weeks.  Thanks to Megan Waite, Heather Squillace, Becky Woomer for all their efforts. And, congratulations to 50/50 Lottery winners Melissa Baumbeck and Linda Halverson who each split $200+ with the Committee for future activities.
Please do not Park Cars on Street
We all know summer brings students home from college, visiting cousins, and party guests, but please be aware, regular on-street parking is against out covenants and can block emergency vehicles.  Thank you.

  Wildlife - Owl Rescue

Here is what happened...

On Sunday around 11 am, my kids and I were in the front yard doing sidewalk chalk on our walkway. After about 10 minutes, I looked over at my daughter and realized there was an owl sitting under a tree right behind her! Only about 4 feet away! I told the kids to quickly get up and walk towards me as I had no idea if the owl would try to attack. From a safe distance, we watched to see if it was moving and then we saw it blink. I was so surprised to see an owl that for a few moments I actually wondered if it was an owl or a strange cat since it had pointy ears!

Our neighbors, the Bass family, came over and we all looked at the owl who didn't even react to us all staring at it. All he did was follow us with his head when someone moved. We weren't sure if he was injured or sick.

We left him there and I started researching options to help him because I knew it wasn't normal for an owl to be sitting on the ground in the middle of the day. Most of the places I found that take in birds of prey said that you had to bring the animal to them!

Before leaving for church around 3pm, we saw the owl try to fly, but instead he hopped down the walkway to the side of our house. So now we knew he was definitely injured.

When we got home at 6, he was still there. My husband had the great idea to post the owl on the Aberdeen Facebook page. Within an hour, there were a bunch of comments from our awesome neighborhood with ideas on who to contact! One of those comments was from Kimberly Cooper who contacted a local wildlife rehabber who was willing to take the owl if someone brought the owl to her. So Kimberly and Katrina Oliver arrived at 8p and with a crowd of about 15 neighbors watching (word travels fast), the two were able to capture the owl using blankets and take him right to the rehabber.

I was so grateful to know that the owl was getting help. What an amazing community we live in!

(I don't know who the rehabber is or his condition. I would recommend asking Kimberly or Katrina about that.)

The Semi-annual Aberdeen Community Garage Sale on May 7 was another rousing success with more than twenty homes displaying treasures.  Volunteers from Pat's Place picked up unsold donations.  Below Rebecca Smith and assistants finish up a great day.
Shakerag Break-ins (April) and Advice from Forsyth County Sheriffs Office

Good Morning Everyone,

We have had a couple of burglaries in the same neighborhood located off of McGinnis Ferry Road in the Shakerag Farm subdivision. We are able to say that one of these happened during the day on 4/20/16 between the hours of 0815 and 1605 hours while the residents were away. The other happened while the residents were out of town sometime between 4/7/16 and 4/10/16. The time is undermined. These incidents are under investigation and no further details can be provided at this time.

Some suggestions to help us deter crime….

1- Ask your residents to be our eyes and our ears…our deputies cannot be everywhere at all of the time. What I mean is, tell them to keep an eye out for each other. If they see a suspicious person or vehicle….call 911 immediately. It is important that they call right then so we can respond and make contact with the suspicious person/vehicle and find out who they are and why they are there.

2- If a resident is going out of town have them talk to their neighbor and let them know when they are leaving and returning. Have their neighbor collect their newspapers, mail, trash can etc.…

3- Go onto our website and fill out a vacation request. This will inform FCSO that you are out of town and a deputy responsible for your area will come by and check on your home.

4- Don’t be afraid to call 911….call immediately if they think something is suspicious….it is okay if it turns out to be noting. Better safe than sorry.

 We are a team.

Thank you for working with us to keep Forsyth safe!!
