" Nature alone is antique, and the oldest art a mushroom "

A Fungus Among Us

Have you noticed all the mushrooms around, lately? I'm not afraid to admit it, I have a little thing for them. I don't mean eating them, although I do enjoy mushrooms on lots of things. What's funny is that I can't say why I like them so much. I can only surmise that it has something to do with being a child born in the 1970's. I remember my parents having things with mushrooms on them like ceramic trivets,  canisters, and an apron- but there was probably more. While I'm at it, I also feel inclined to tell you that I that there is a special place in my heart for macrame owls and Fleetwood Mac, but perhaps we'll delve into that another time.

What I'm really talking about are those amazing fungi that just pop up over night. Where there once was just grass or mulch there is now a stem and cap. What's almost even more amazing is the variety. Some are giant, some are teeny tiny, some grow on trees, some are filled with a fine powder of spores, some are delicate, some grotesque, some edible, others extremely poisonous . According to www.mushroomthejournal.com, there are 10,000 identified species in North America but there could be many more undiscovered species.

I wish I had the time and experience to accurately identify these Fun Guys (see what I did there?) that I've photographed. With names like Pleated Inky, Puff Ball, Elm Oyster, Dryad's Saddle, or Fairy Bonnet these masters of decay seem more likely to be found in a Tolkien novel rather than in my yard. Regardless, I love to see the diversity of nature in the fungus among us.

It's time to apply your pre-emergent

Drive through vehicles to be clearly marked
You spoke and the ACC listened! Going forward the vehicle used for the ACC drive throughs will be clearly marked with two car magnets. They will display the HMS logo.

An Ounce of Prevention...
If you are going on vacation or will be away for a few days you can have
the sheriff's department check on your home. This not only gives you a secure feeling, but also increases police presence in Aberdeen.
and click on the "Vacation Check" icon to submit a request.

It's a good thing to keep the Forsyth non emergency number handy, as well. This number goes to the same agents as calling 911, but if you are on vacation and want to get to our Forsyth 911 call center for some reason the non-emergency number is the best way.

Forsyth County Non-Emergency number: 770-781-3087

Design Standards: Signs
Please note that there are many caveats regarding the rules for signage in our neighborhood. Depending on what type of sign and the sign's use determines the rule. Below is Aberdeen's design standard for garage sale signs, which are not allowed to be handwritten. Please review the entire "sign" section, located on the www.aberdeencommunity.org website under documents, to determine the correct guidelines for your particular sign.

Section 5.06 (B)

"Garage Sale" or "Yard Sale" signs are permitted 24 hours before the event, to be removed immediately after the event. Homeowners are allowed two directional signs for the event and only from 6:00AM until 6:00PM the day of the event. All sale signs and directional signs must be pre-printed (See examples in Appendix II). The signs are commercially available. Alternatively, printed signs produced on a home computer are acceptable. Hand written signs are not acceptable. There will be an automatic fine of $25.00 for each sign violation. Failure to observe the posting times allowed (putting signs up before the sale and/or failure to remove them after the sale) will result in an automatic $25.00 fine. Balloons, flags or streamers are not permitted at any time associated with “Garage Sale" signs.

Board of Directors: Announcements
Violation Letters
If a homeowner receives a letter from HMS regarding an ACC Violation and the homeowner has a question, the homeowner should follow the instructions on the letter and contact HMS. HMS has access to the records and can better answer any questions the homeowner may have.

Please do not go to an ACC members house or call an ACC Member to confront them on issues addressed in the letter.
