The Hobby of Helping

The cup in the photograph above was a gift from my son's preschool teacher as a thank you for being room mom that year. Clearly there must be a great many of us with "the sickness" or else Ms. Bonnie would not have found this little gem at a chain gift store.  Are we all just gluttons for punishment? Nope. Know why? We just want to help. We want to build opportunities to connect neighbors, we want to create memories for your children and ours, we want to help your kids swim all the way to win county, we want to combat drivers running stop signs or find out why the trash didn't get picked up or help the neighbor find their lost dog.   We want to help to take the load off of a teacher, a friend, a neighbor, or a stranger.

I don't play golf or tennis. You won't find me bird watching or collecting stamps. At home I've resorted to calling my addiction to volunteering for things I don't have time for "my hobby." I get in less trouble that way, but I'm just happy that I think it's something worth making time for. I'm waiting for my husband to ask me to take up laundry as a hobby, as well. Perhaps then we could regain the use of the love seat.

When it comes to my hobby of helping, my cup runneth over. Whenever I try to lessen the volume by giving up a project I end up replacing it with another. If only I could just make the cup bigger!  Unfortunately, this will be the last Advocate I put together for the community so that I can focus on the social committee, getting my kid through 3rd grade math, work, and oh yeah...laundry.
So who out there has room in their cup? I've got something awesome to fill it with.

We're Tickled Pink!

We'd like to thank these ladies for working hard for our community!
If you've rented the clubhouse you've corresponded with Kathy McGinty. She always has timely responses, especially when you forget to put the date on the reservation request (not speaking from experience, of course. That's just what I've heard). In addition to that she keeps the clubhouse clean and in tiptop shape for private rentals and community events.
Thanks, Kathy, for all you do!
Have you ever been curious who manages the landscaping in our common areas, coordinates pool related repairs, liaisons with our lifeguard company, or schedules biannual parkway cleanup? That would be Helen Brown. She's also fascinating to talk to because she knows the neighborhood like the back of her hand and half the people in Forsyth county. Thanks, Helen, for all you do!
Thank you, Jenn Mathews, for all your time and effort put into managing the Aberdeen Breakers, this year. We are grateful to have someone so dedicated to our little ones!

Tennis News

The next junior tennis program for fall will begin in early August. An email will be sent out to the entire neighborhood with more information.  Please email aberdeentenniscommittee@gmail.com with any questions.

PoolParty Know How

Aberdeen pool is the perfect venue for a summer birthday! Please remember that planned group events with more than 10 participants must be registered in advance with the pool manager. This may require an additional lifeguard to be present, and if so it is the responsibility of the resident to pay for the additional guard. You may order another guard online at www.amspoolsga.com.
Helen Brown, Aberdeen Pool Manager, may be reached at 678-232-9716.

Social Butterflies Needed

Are you a Social Butterfly, Decorating Diva or Persistent Planner? Then you should join the Aberdeen Social Committee! Please email Tara Garcia at mtcgarcia@comcast.net.

Congratulations to our Aberdeen Breakers on another great season! We finished the regular season 4-1, losing a close one to Polo Golf and Country Club and earning a second place trophy in our division. A huge thanks to our coaches: Margaret Brown, Kayla Barker, Meg Abrams and Ben Martin. Under their coaching and guidance the Aberdeen Breakers were able to win the Forsyth County Championship swim meet at Georgia Tech for the first time in 17 years! We are super proud of the kids for all of their hard work and dedication this season. We'd also like to thank our neighbors for your support and patience!

Go Breakers!

Kindergarten Meetup
The rising Kindergartners of Sharon Elementary gathered for a meet and greet to get to know some of their future classmates. They played games like Musical Papers & What's My Name, colored together, made fancy paper airplanes, and enjoyed popsicles before heading outside to put the Aberdeen playground to good use. The class of 2031 is off to a great start for their first year at Sharon!

Speed Bumps
Two lucky boys had a front row seat for the installation of the new speed bumps that were put on Westminster Lane in May! Ethan Wilson and Jackson Mayfield were elated to get to see the dump truck and bobcat, in action.
